James "Jim" Lawrence Black,  of Sylvania Township, Ohio, passed away on February 20, 2015. He was deeply loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. Born near Philadelphia and having lived many years in Connecticut, Jim and his family moved to Toledo in 1969 to work for Toledo Scale. He then worked for DeVilbiss, Owens Corning Fiberglass, Tibbet and Danberry. Next to his family, Jim's loves were the Navy and cycling. Jim graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1956 and retired a Lieutenant Commander. He was an active member of the Toledo Chapter of the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association, the Toledo Area Military Officers Association of America and the Reserve Officers Association. He was also a member of The Navy League. With cycling, Jim used to race but eventually became a world-renown official for cycling. Jim was an Olympic Commissar for cycling events around the globe. He was the Chief Official of all cycling at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He also promoted and managed the Toledo Glass City Classic from 1979 to 1985. Jim was a loving father to his 2 children and an awesome grandfather to the 3 grandchildren he loved so much. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Alan W. (Linda Secondari) Black of New York City, and his daughter and son-in-law Karen (Richard) Angelbeck of Chicago. His three surviving grandchildren are Luca Black, Stella Black, and Grant Angelbeck. He is also survived by his sister, Joanne (Charles) Wood of New York; niece, Sue Tractenberg; nephews, William Wood and Robert Wood, and his former wife, Dinnie Black of Toledo, The family will receive friends from Noon-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at The Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave. , in Toledo, where a Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Commodore Perry Division of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps c/o John Nowakowski, 828 Berkey-Southern Road, Swanton, Ohio 43558. Published in Toledo Blade on Feb. 22, 2015.
