Arthur Cranwell Boensch known to all as "Cranny, age 80, of 908 Sandy Springs Circle, Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Thursday evening, February 6, 2014, at his residence.

Born November 9, 1933, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Frank and Alice Cranwell Boensch. While attending Moultrie High School in Mt. Pleasant, SC, Mr. Boensch was elected class president and president of the student body. He also set a single season SC state high school football scoring record that endured from 1950 to 1984. He attended Bullis Prep School in Silver Springs, MD, where he received an award as Best Over-all Student prior to entering the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD from which he graduated with an Engineering degree in 1956.

While in the Navy, Mr. Boensch served as the Assistant Navigator of a heavy cruiser, the Engineering Officer of a conventional submarine and the Missile Officer and Weapons Department Head of a fleet ballistic missile submarine during the height of the Cold War. He resigned from the Navy in 1967 to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law. While there, he was elected president (justice) of his law school fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta. Mr. Boensch commenced the practice of law in Walterboro, SC, in 1970, with the firm of Ackerman and Boensch and later became a member of the firm of Bogoslow and Boensch. He was the Walterboro Municipal Court Judge for five years. In 1975, he became a solo practitioner and several years prior to his retirement in 1995 he formed the firm of Boensch and Sapp. He was listed in Who's Who of American Law.

Mr. Boensch was active in the Boy Scouts of America, having served as a scoutmaster for eighteen years and in other scout leadership roles as a member of the Pineland District and as a member of the governing board for the Boy Scout Coastal Carolina Council for over twenty years. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award that a scout council can give to an adult scouter. In addition to his scout activities, Mr. Boensch was very active in the Episcopal Church, having served numerous terms on the vestry at St. Jude's Church and on the diocesan standing committee. He was active in Faith Alive, an Episcopal renewal movement, and served as its diocesan representative and as the vice chairman of its national governing board. For a period of time, Cranny and Annelle were members of Christ-Saint Paul Church in Yonges Island where he was active in many aspects of the church's work. He also served as chairman of the governing board for the Colleton Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse for a number of years. Mr. Boensch was a sailing enthusiast and won numerous sailing trophies in local regattas sponsored by various yacht clubs in the lowcountry area.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annelle Beach Boensch; three children, Cranny Boensch, Jr. and his wife Claudia of Walterboro, Frances Murdaugh of Walterboro and Benjamin Boensch and his wife Cecile of Rowesville; and three step-children, Gary Beach of Walterboro, Susan Maley of Wetumpka, Alabama and James Beach, Jr. of Walterboro. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Frank N. Boensch, IV and his wife Sarah of Mount Pleasant; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; as well as his beloved pet, Toby. Mr. Boensch was predeceased in death by two children, Alice "Boo" Metzendorf and Katherine Breland; one stepson, David W. Beach; and one grandson, Lucas Boensch.
