James White Egerton,  Captain, U.S. Navy, Retired, of Monterey, CA died Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. Jim was born on August 3, 1933 to Katherine W. Egerton and Weldon D. Egerton in Louisburg, NC. He graduated from Louisburg High School in 1951, and from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1956. He married Helen Mary Rugland, of Appleton, WI on December 19, 1965 while earning a Master of Science in Communications Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. During his 31-year career in the Navy, he served during the Vietnam War and the Iran Hostage crisis. He served as Commanding Officer of the USS Truett (FF-1095) and the USS Reeves (CG-24). At the time of his retirement in 1987, he was Director of Programs at the Naval Postgraduate School. At the time of his death, he was still working at NPS as a trainer for the Defense Travel System. Survivors include his wife Helen Egerton, his daughter Kate Egerton, her spouse, Edmund Pendleton, and their son, Malcolm James Lee Pendleton. James White Egerton will be buried at sea, and a memorial service in Monterey will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his name to the Big Sur Land Trust (P.O. Box 4071, Monterey, CA 93942) or a charity of your choice.
