Donald L. Grimes of Middleton, WI, died on 17 February 2008. Don was born in Wellsville, NY, the son of Eva and Lawrence Grimes. Prior to entering the Naval Academy, he attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Alfred University. At USNA, he was a member of the 23rd Company, advertising manager of The Log and a member of the rifle team.

While on active duty, he served in ships, among them SOMERS and LEXINGTON.

After resigning his commission in 1960, he was employed at Honeywell in Los Angeles,   CA, where he met his future wife, Sharon Jones. They were married in 1963. Don held various engineering and marketing positions, as well as having a career in electron microscopy. Most recently he founded the trade journal, Microscopy Today. He had many hobbies and skills, including making cedar strip canoes and woodworking.

Don enjoyed his family and friends and lived life to the fullest. Don is survived by his wife, Sharon; two children, Jennifer Baillies (Jeffrey) of Oregon and John Grimes (Jennifer) of Portland, OR;   grandchildren, Paige and Jack Baillies and Phoebe and Greta Grimes; and sisters, Barb  Guynup and Joan (Sandy) Reuning. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Don’s memory to the United States Naval Academy Foundation.
