Cdr. Thomas R. Langley, Jr. USN (RET), age 81, with family by his side, passed away in Tallahassee on March 8, 2015, following a brief illness. A longtime resident of Sacramento, California, Tom had recently moved to Tallahassee to be near his beloved grandchildren.  Tom was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 12, 1933, to Thomas R. and Ann Marie (Hesford) Langley. The family soon moved to California, where Tom's mother passed away when he was just a toddler. With his father a U.S. Navy officer who was frequently at sea, Tom's great Aunt Sarah "Nellie" Hesford emigrated from England to help care for him. Tom recalls watching from the hills around San Francisco Bay with Aunt Nellie as his father's ship set out to sea following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. He didn't see his father again for more than two years. A devout Catholic, Tom served as an altar boy for several years at St. Mary Magdalen Dominican Parish in Berkeley, California, and attended parochial schools before his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated in June 1956, exactly 30 years to the day from his father's graduation from the Naval Academy in 1926 and on the day that his father, Cdr. Thomas R. Langley, Sr., retired after 30 years' service in the Navy. Tom's naval career as a submariner spanned more than 20 years, with duty stations including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, aboard the USS Barbel; Holy Loch, Scotland, aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln; and Subic Bay, Philippines, aboard the USS Tunny. Medals and commendations included Meritorious Unit Commendation, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit with Combat V, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star, Combat Action Ribbon and the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V. Following his naval career, Tom worked for Honeywell in Silverdale, Washington, and the California Department of Veterans Affairs as an administrator at the Veterans Home of California - Barstow. After retirement, Tom stayed active with several volunteer organizations in Sacramento, including the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary, the California State Railroad Museum and Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary. He is survived by daughters Victoria Langley Heller (husband David) of Tallahassee, Amy E. Langley (husband Bruce Lowe) of Santee, California; grandchildren Luke W. Heller and Avery E. Heller of Tallahassee, and former wife Sheila Beckwith of Rockville, Rhode Island.
