beloved husband, father, and grandfather and brother
passed away unexpectedly in Vienna, Virginia on Saturday, September 14, 2013.
He was born on November 27, 1931 in San Pedro, California, a son of the late
Rear Admiral John Henry Shultz USN (Retired, USNA ’22) and Martha Merwin
Shultz. As a member of a frequently moving Navy family, he attended many
schools before attending Sullivan's Prep School in Washington, DC in
preparation for the entrance exams and for attending the United States Naval Academy,
graduating in June 1956. He then went to sea as a surface warfare officer in
the Pacific assigned to the PICKAWAY (APA 222); LAMOURE COUNTY (LST 883) as
Executive Officer; RENSHAW (DD 499); SOUTHERLAND (DD 743) as Executive Officer;
DESRON Fifteen as CSO and Operations Officer; Flag Secretary to Commander
Seventh Fleet (VADMs Hyland and Bringle) off Viet Nam 2/67 to 7/69); and BARBEY
(DE 1088) as Commissioning Captain. Shore duty assignments included the Bureau
of Naval Personnel in Arlington VA, Command and Staff and Naval Warfare Courses
at the Naval War College, Newport RI, and Aide to the Assistant Secretary of
the Navy for Financial Management at the Pentagon. Upon retirement from the
Navy, he was manager of the Sulgrave Club in Washington DC, and was a staff
member at the National Security Industrial Association in Washington DC before
fully retiring in 1998. His love of all sports, especially Navy and
Redskins football, was infectious. He retained a keen interest in the Naval
Academy and served on the class executive committee until his passing. Ted was
an avid fly fisherman, vegetable gardener, wine connoisseur, and gourmet chef.
He could enliven any occasion and enjoyed living life to the fullest. He is
survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mona Anderson Shultz; daughters,
Laurel Quinn of Cranbury NJ, Stephanie Mills (Christopher) of Highlands Ranch,
CO and Andrea Shultz of Washington, DC; son, Theodore R. Shultz (Laura) of
Ascot, England; brothers, John M. Shultz (Virginia) of Austin, TX (USMA ’46)
and Robert T. Shultz (Margaret) of Arlington, VA (USNA ’50); and seven
cherished grandchildren, Annelise, Maria, and Genevieve Quinn; John Henry,
Hannah and William Mills; and Max Shultz. Mass of Christian Burial was
celebrated on Friday, September 27 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Vienna,
VA. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery took place at a later
date.
